Statement of the Embassy of the United States of America

October 16, 2009

Pristina, Republic of Kosovo

The Ambassador of the United States of America in Kosovo, Christopher Dell, welcomed the signing today of a treaty to demarcate the border between the Republic of Kosovo and the Republic of Macedonia.  The Ambassador noted that this agreement was the result of good faith negotiations by representatives of both states, and, that for Kosovo it fulfills an important provision of the Ahtisaari Plan.

This treaty demonstrates the commitment of both the Republic of Kosovo and the Republic of Macedonia to the establishment of good neighborly relations and to stability in the region as they progress toward the goal they share -- full membership in the European and Euro-Atlantic community of nations.  Ambassador Dell noted that this agreement opens the door to the establishment of full diplomatic relations between the two countries, yet another achievement in the consolidation of Kosovo’s role in the region.
