USAID Continues with a new economic initiative, July 2, 2007

Pristina, July 2, 2007 — The Economic Management for Stability and Growth Project, a new project aimed at strengthening the institutions and environment necessary to accelerate Kosovo’s economic development is starting this July.  The project, supported by the American people through the U.S. Agency for International Development will be implemented by Bearing Point, an international company well-known in Kosovo.

This 36-month economic growth project will focus on ensuring strong implementation of policies and laws, including those related to successful implementation of the Settlement agreement, as well as further strengthening Kosovar capacity to effectively administer key economic institutions.

“Economic development is crucial to Kosovo’s prosperity and stability.  For Kosovo to succeed, it needs strong economic institutions for sound fiscal and financial sectors, it must continue to attract private investment by creating a business-friendly environment and by completing privatization, it needs a well-implemented legal framework that supports the private sector for trade and investment, and lastly, but importantly, Kosovo needs a modern and efficient energy sector,” says Dr. Michael Farbman, USAID/Kosovo Mission Director.  “This project,” Farbman says, “builds upon previous successes and will continue USAID efforts in assisting Kosovar institutions as they work to facilitate economic growth so that Kosovo can integrate quickly and smoothly into regional and European markets.”

The U.S. Agency for International Development has provided economic and humanitarian assistance worldwide for more than 40 years.
