CONTACT GROUP STATEMENT
February 11, 2007
The Contact Group in Pristina is greatly saddened that there have been deaths following Saturday’s Vetevendosje demonstration. We offer our sincerest condolences to the families who have lost a loved one.
The Contact Group is deeply disappointed that the Vetevendosje protestors chose to endanger the personal security of police as well as the integrity of the Kosovo Assembly building. There is no place in Kosovo now or in the future for violence as a means to secure political objectives. Those who resort to violence and provocation only damage their own cause in the eyes of world opinion, and we can see first hand the tragic results that ensue here in Kosovo.
The Contact Group expresses full support for Kosovo authorities, UNMIK, and KFOR in maintaining a safe and stable environment. We welcome the establishment of an independent and thorough investigation, and we hope that this will provide early and full clarity on Saturday’s tragic events.
